Vanessa Newman, DO
Biography
I earned my medical degree at Touro University College of Osteopathic medicine in California and went on to complete a three-year residency program in Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine/Neuromusculoskeletal Medicine (OMM/NMM) at St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, NY. As chief resident at the onset of the COVID surge in NYC, I had the honor and challenge of leading my department through unprecedented times for our healthcare system, treating COVID patients using osteopathic manipulative medicine. I have experience treating patients from every age group including babies beginning hours after birth, growing children, pregnant women, adults and those transitioning at the end of their lives-- for a wide range of developmental, neurologic, rheumatologic, gastrointestinal, respiratory, orthopedic, infectious disease, and musculoskeletal issues. I love meeting patients wherever they are on their healing journey and supporting the intelligence of their bodies in achieving more optimal health. I grew up in the Washington DC area before attending Colorado College where I majored in neuroscience while competing as a NCAA Division I soccer player. A career-ending knee injury provided me with a personal understanding of the potency of hands-on healing and what I would later discover to be osteopathic principles regarding health and healing. Prior to beginning osteopathic medical school I conducted neurophysiology research at NYU before living in Guatemala while completing USC Keck school of medicine’s language and cultural immersion program. I focused my personal studies during that time on maternal and fetal health, and traditional Mayan healing practices in the region. I love to share my passion for osteopathic medicine with students at TUCOM- CA, and beyond. When I'm not teaching, learning or seeing patients, I enjoy spending time in nature, running, rock climbing, practicing yoga, contact improvisation dance, singing, skiing and nutritious cooking with my husband, Max, and our pup, Luna.
