"Medicine uniquely combines my passion for science and discovery, commitment to personal continued growth, and interest in advocating for those underserved in healthcare and underrepresented in medicine. My goal is to one day serve as a championing leader and advocate for surrounding communities of the Bay Area as a surgeon-researcher. Ultimately, I would aim to devote my career to researching underlying pathophysiology of medical illnesses in search of novel treatments for those not helped by the current standards of care. Pursuing medicine provides me with the chance to learn from and develop the current landscape of practicing medicine. "If you had asked me why I wanted to pursue medicine at different stages of my life, I would have a different response each time. As a child, I wanted to pursue medicine because it combined science and helping people. As the years passed, I had grown to fall in love with the multidisciplinary aspects of medicine. But now, in medical school, my answer to why I pursued medicine has once again changed. While studying amongst the brightest and most compassionate people, I realized that medicine is one of the few fields that requires every individual to have altruistic intentions of working towards a goal bigger than themselves. The idea of using the scientific understanding of the human body while recognizing and respecting the human experience to create healthier individuals and communities is extremely rewarding." For an event 25 years in the making, the wait was well worth it for guests of Touro University California’s 25th Anniversary Gala, held August 25 outside Farragut Inn. "As a woman of color, and a first-generation osteopathic medical student, I have lived experiences that have inspired me to be who I am today and the physician I want to become. Stemming from my experiences as a member of a community often disregarded and suppressed in medicine, I can empathize with those who continue to be affected by systemic discrimination and racism that facilitate the social determinants of health. Dismantling the systems and the social norms, policies, and inequities that uphold these factors has been and continues to be my priority as a future osteopathic physician. Throughout my journey in medicine, I hope to continue using my position to help care for patients while addressing healthcare disparities and further dismantling structural factors that affect our underrepresented communities.
