Edgar Martinez

Please share briefly about your history and background

My upbringing in Pittsburg was rich with cultural influences. The values instilled in me by my family – hard work, community, and a keen sense of identity – were shaped by our Latino heritage. Moving to Antioch brought new experiences, but the importance of family and tradition remained at the forefront of my life. At 25, I made the pivotal decision to return to school, starting my journey at Los Medanos Community College. I later attended San Francisco State University and TUC, where I gained knowledge and skills that would empower my career. 

Why are you proud to be Latinx/Hispanic?

In Latino Culture family is especially important. My family is my rock. If I am going through good times or tough times my family has always been there to support me. Food also plays a pivotal role in our culture. My mother always made sure we had meals on the table, those shared moments were more than just nourishment; they were about connection. Family and food are particularly important parts of our Latino heritage. 

Why is it important to celebrate Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month?

Celebrating Latinx/Hispanic Heritage Month gives us an opportunity to raise awareness about health issues in the Latino community. Language barriers remain a major obstacle, making health literacy crucial. During my time in the pharmacy department, I often assisted Latino members who came to pick up their prescriptions. Being able to communicate with them in Spanish allowed me to provide better support, and they genuinely appreciated discussing their medications in their native language. It was clear that my ability to speak Spanish made a positive difference in their healthcare experience.

What brought you to TUC?

I wanted to attend a university that was committed to serving the community. TUC has several community outreach programs. 

What is your favorite quote?

“Life is a risk you must act” The quote reminds me that although I had many responsibilities it was important for me to pursue my education. Going back to school was a risk because I had a full-time job, mortgage, and benefits. However, obtaining my degree would be an asset for me in the future. I have tremendous support from my family. 

Is there anything else that you want to share?

 I was an older student when I started the pharmacy program at TUC. I want to share that it is never too late to pursue your education. Go for it!
