Touro University California (TUC) celebrated a pivotal moment in collaboration with the Touro University system, unveiling its first Los Angeles-based Physician Assistant (PA) Studies Program on January 6, 2025. Hosted at Mission Community Hospital in Panorama City, the event underscored a shared commitment to expanding healthcare education and meeting the needs of medically disadvantaged communities across California.

A New Era of Healthcare Education in Los Angeles

This is Touro University’s eighth PA program and part of Touro University System’s larger mission to train healthcare professionals who embody compassion, skill, and dedication. Mission Community Hospital, located in a diverse area of Los Angeles, serves as the ideal location for this strategic initiative.

Dr. Alan Kadish, President of the Touro University System, highlighted the significance of the new program. “Physician assistants play a critical role in healthcare, especially in communities where access to physicians is limited,” said Dr. Kadish. “This program will empower our students to make an immediate and lasting impact in Los Angeles and beyond.”

The event drew a standing-room-only crowd of over 100 attendees, including university leadership, local dignitaries, healthcare professionals, students, and community members, underscoring the excitement and significance of this new chapter for Touro University.

“This program embodies Touro’s mission of providing access to education and serving the underserved,” said Patricia Salkin, JD, PhD, Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost at Touro University System. “Today’s celebration is a reminder of the power of collaboration and the difference we can make together.”

Welcoming the First Cohort of Students

The ceremony included recognition of the program’s inaugural class of 45 students. These future healthcare providers bring a diverse range of experiences and a shared commitment to addressing health inequities.

“This program is about more than just training competent clinicians—it’s about building a community of professionals who lead with empathy and purpose,” said Joanne DePrisco, MS, PA-C, Program Director. “I’m confident that our students will go on to transform healthcare and inspire others through their dedication and compassion.”

Dr. Tami Hendriksz, Interim Chief Academic Officer of TUC and Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine, celebrated the collaborative effort behind the program’s launch. “This is more than a ribbon cutting,” said Dr. Hendriksz. “It’s a celebration of what’s possible when we come together to tackle pressing challenges in healthcare and education.”

A Presentation from the Panorama City Chamber of Commerce

The event included a special presentation from the Panorama City Chamber of Commerce, delivered by Executive Director Saul Mejia. On behalf of California District 6 State Senator Carolyn Menjivar and Los Angeles District 6 Council member Imelda Padilla, Mejia presented certificates honoring the grand opening and acknowledging TUC’s dedication to advancing healthcare and education in the community.

“We are proud to welcome Touro University California to Panorama City,” said Mejia. “This program will play a crucial role in improving the health and prosperity of our local community and beyond. Congratulations on this remarkable achievement, and we look forward to the positive impact this partnership will bring.”

A Testament to Community Partnership

The launch was made possible through strong partnerships, particularly with Mission Community Hospital. Dr. Glenn Marshak, President of Hospital Operations and Medical Affairs at Mission Community Hospital, reflected on the shared vision that brought the program to life. “This is a dream come true,” said Dr. Marshak. “We’re training the next generation of providers who will deliver exceptional care while addressing health equity.”

A Commitment to Service and Excellence

Touro University California’s expansion to Los Angeles exemplifies its dedication to improving healthcare access and education nationwide. Guided by Judaic values of social justice, the pursuit of knowledge, and service to humanity, TUC continues to shape the future of healthcare.

“This new chapter is about connection and impact,” said Dr. Kadish. “Our PA program here is integral to Touro’s mission of filling gaps in education and healthcare while supporting the diverse communities we serve.”
