Dr. Joanne Canedo

Dr. Joanne Canedo continued her educational path toward research focused on improving pharmacy practice and health outcomes after receiving her PharmD at Touro University California College of Pharmacy.

Canedo is a third-year PhD student in the Department of Pharmacy Administration at the University of Mississippi School of Pharmacy and is currently a research assistant in the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

She is also a 2023 Robert Smith, MD Graduate Scholar in the Jackson Heart Study Graduate Training and Education Center at the University of Mississippi Medical Center.

Research Focus, Recognition

Since graduating from Touro in 2021, the majority of her work has been influenced by research related to pharmacy education and practice. Previous projects have also reflected research contributing toward oncology care, drug shortages, cardiovascular epidemiology from a population health perspective, and the opioid epidemic.

While pursuing her PhD at Ole Miss, Canedo has been recognized by the American Public Health Association Pharmacy Section, receiving the 2022 Stuart Feldman Student Community Award for her involvement in research projects that provide implications toward improving health outcomes of communities.

Leadership Role, Grant Project

Canedo holds a leadership position within the University of Mississippi International Society for Pharmacoeconomics and Outcomes Research (ISPOR) student chapter, where she and her peers received the 2023 ISPOR Outstanding Student Chapter Award. Canedo was awarded the Board of Pharmacy Specialties 2023 Seed Grant for her project: “Comparison of reported work activities, professional autonomy, and interprofessional collaboration between board-certified and non-board-certified oncology pharmacists.”

Her future research plans are to utilize her pharmacy background to expand her research interests toward investigating health care outcomes among underrepresented populations.

Outside of student life, Canedo enjoys attending football tailgating events to support the Ole Miss Rebels, binge-watching “90 Day Fiancé,” and taking her cat on hiking trails around Oxford, Mississippi.
