A new cohort of Touro University California School of Nursing students earned their honors cords during a ceremony this fall on campus.

Nine new Master of Science in Nursing candidates are now members of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing. The Omega Alpha Chapter has been based at TUC since shortly after the Nursing program was founded 10 years ago.

The inductees are Sherry Blackburn, Jill Cac, Brigitte Dominguez, Pamela Hemphill, Mariah Whincy Hurt, Joelle Lejano, Tayler Tildsley, Deanna Phyllis Garcia, and Quynh-Chi Nguyen.

Chapter Driven by Touro Alumnae

Three early School of Nursing students banded together to form the local chapter. Alumni of the Nursing program remain key players.

Jennifer Veler (Class of 2019) is serving in her fifth year as chapter president. Her involvement in chapter leadership has allowed her to meet nurses from around the world and to cast the chapter’s votes to elect the new Sigma board of directors.

“This is an amazing and unforgettable experience, and it is the democratic process at its best,” she said.

Veler said she benefits from chapter membership through both professional and social opportunities, along with humanitarian efforts, that have given her the chance to network with colleagues and meet new inductees.

“I’ve been able to contribute to nursing efforts to improve our local and global communities,” she said. “I would not be able to have these opportunities if I was not a member of Sigma.”

Sigma Honor Society Membership Includes Call to Action

Celebrating 10 Years of Service Touro University California School of Nursing Established 2014“Your membership is yours to define,” Veler said to the inductees during the ceremony Sept. 5 in the Farragut Inn Ballroom on campus. “As professional nurses and Sigma members, we have the credibility, and visibility, to speak and act on behalf of nursing, and Sigma, and the opportunity to represent the vast diversity and capability of the nursing profession, to shape the world as we would like to see it.”

The Sigma mission is to develop nurse leaders anywhere to improve health care everywhere.
