Student Demonstrates Power of Movement
Alumni Scholarship Recipient Balances Academic, Outside Interests

Evelyn Wong hit the ground running – literally and figuratively – after arriving at Touro University California to pursue a Joint Master of Physician Assistant Studies/Master of Public Health degree.
She took up long-distance running after admiring the trails on Mare Island. She started a running club for her peers. She’s won praise from her professors. And she’s earned a $500 Alumni Association scholarship.
“Touro has felt like home throughout my time here and I’ve appreciated how much the university invests in its students,” Wong said. “This scholarship is another reminder of the generosity and encouragement that make this community so special. I hope to carry that same spirit forward and support future students in the years ahead.”
Dr. Joy Moverley, Director of the Joint PA/MPH program and a 2012 program alumna, said Wong “goes above and beyond” and praised Wong for her leadership within the program.
Wong has served as co-president of Christian Health Fellowship, vice president of the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists Student Community organization on campus, social chair of the campus Physician Assistant Club, and as a mentor for TUC’s Health Careers Opportunity Program.
“Evelyn is very involved in our campus community,” Moverley said. “We are so proud of all she has achieved both academically and among our campus community.”
Life Experiences Help to Refine PA Student’s Focus
Wong wrote in her application essay that her experience with prediabetes has helped to shape her service, which includes organizing Touro’s first 5K for diabetes awareness as well as helping to start an unofficial weekly run club through which she and her classmates have already completed two half-marathons.
“Balancing these commitments while maintaining a strong academic standing has transformed Touro from an unfamiliar beginning into a foundation for my growth as a leader, servant, and future PA,” Wong said. “Looking ahead, I hope to expand my impact by promoting diabetes awareness and prevention through movement to improve health outcomes.”
Wong is scheduled to graduate in 2027.
The other Alumni Association scholarship recipients are Manda Nguyen-Sanh from the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Jamila Beckford from the College of Pharmacy.
Money for the scholarships is raised through the greater TUC alumni community. To support the fund, follow the link to https://tu.edu/give/ and select Alumni Association Scholarship Fund from the drop-down menu.
