Together We DO

Let’s be the Change. Let’s Give Hope.

Join us as we help to address a nationwide physician shortage – one DO at a time.

A Meaningful Gift of Scholarship

Dr. Jonathan Revels, DO Class of 2012 and TUC’s 2024-2025 Alumni Researcher of the Year, envisions a time when student-doctors here on campus can earn a tuition-free DO degree, enabling them to practice in the specialty of their choice, in a community of their choice, without the burden of student debt.

The Challenge

There’s a shortage of medical doctors nationally across all specialty areas, with a projected shortfall of more than 187,000 full-time equivalent physicians by 2037 1. These shortages are particularly striking in rural areas, where access to physicians and medical specialists falls short of access that’s available to urban residents 2 3 4. But shortages exist in urban settings as well 5. These shortages will only get worse as aging physicians retire and as the overall population ages 6.

The Impact

The effects ripple far beyond the classroom. Medical school debt – at around $255,000 7 before adding interest on loans – can nudge students away from rural care, where they’re needed most, or away from medicine altogether. This isn’t a lack of talent; it’s a lack of access.

When communities face a shortage of quality health care, preventive treatment declines, health outcomes worsen, and systemic costs rise. We can’t fix health care disparities such as these without addressing the financial obstacles in medical education.

The Vision

Imagine a different future, where financial barriers no longer prevent and dissuade talented, passionate students from becoming doctors, where the decision as to a chosen specialty or where to practice medicine isn’t weighed against six-figure debt.

We can create that future here at TUC’s College of Osteopathic Medicine, beginning with the first of what we hope to be many full-tuition scholarships.

The Call to Action

With nearly 800 students across our medical school, the idea of funding full tuition for all might sound like a dream. But big change starts small. One notch at a time, we move the dial.

We’re asking 1,200 alumni to join us in donating $1,000 a year to an endowed scholarship fund to support DO students. Together, we can fund at least one full-tuition scholarship every year. One future physician. One life changed. One community better served. And it will only continue to grow after that until we are the first completely free osteopathic medical school in the country!

This kind of grassroots alumni effort, coming together to build something truly transformative, has the power to spark national attention. It sends a message: Access to education is a right, not a privilege. And Touro alumni are leading the way in building a better, healthier future.

Let’s be the change. Let’s give hope.
