Dr. Joanna Cheung Finds Home at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital
PharmD Grad Melds Professional Passion with Outside Interests to Bring Balance to Life
Dr. Joanna Cheung, MSc, RD, PharmD, BCNSP, CNSC, is currently an advanced clinical pharmacist specializing in nutrition support at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital Stanford.
Cheung (PharmD Class of 2014), while at McGill University in Canada, obtained her undergraduate degree in Nutritional Sciences, Master's in Human Nutrition and Graduate Diploma in Dietetics.
She worked as a pediatric oncology dietitian for several years at Children's National Medical Center in Washington, D.C., before deciding to return to pharmacy school. She is a proud alumna of Touro University California where she received her Doctor of Pharmacy degree and was a member of the Rho Chi Honor Society.
Cheung completed her PGY-1 pharmacy residency at Valley Children's Hospital and went on to complete her PGY-2 pharmacy residency focused in gastroenterology and nutrition support where she further developed her passion in that area. After residency training, Cheung continued at Valley Children's Hospital as a pediatric clinical pharmacist before returning to the Bay Area to be closer to family.
She served as the keynote speaker at the College of Pharmacy's White Coat ceremony this fall.
Member of Lucile Packard’s Multidisciplinary Teams
Cheung, in her current role, rounds with the gastroenterology and general pediatrics multidisciplinary teams and serves as a preceptor for pharmacy students and pharmacy residents during their acute care and nutrition support rotations. She advocates for best practices in nutrition support by training pharmacy residents, pharmacists, and medical colleagues in the safe use of parenteral nutrition and by being involved with nutrition support-related quality improvement projects, research, and hospital-wide initiatives to optimize patient care.
Cheung is board-certified in nutrition support and recently was a recipient of the ASHP Pharmacist Nutrition Support Patient-Care Impact Program grant. She volunteers her time with the Board of Pharmacy Specialties and the National Board of Nutrition Support Certification to promote the advancement of the nutrition support profession and is an adjunct professor at the Thomas J. Long School of Pharmacy and Health Sciences at the University of the Pacific.
Dragon Boat Competitor
Cheung was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, and is a loyal Canucks fan. She returned to Vancouver this year to compete with her dragon boat team at the Concord Pacific Dragon Boat Festival. Her most memorable trip was a recent one to Japan, and she hopes to travel soon to Iceland.
She also enjoys hiking, attending concerts, and spending time with friends and family.
