Northbay Health and Touro University California have established a new academic affiliation that will strengthen Northbay Health’s growing Graduate Medical Education (GME) enterprise and help prepare the next generation of physicians and health professionals to serve the region.

Under the three-year agreement, Touro University California will serve as the academic affiliate of Northbay Health’s residency programs. The partnership reflects a shared commitment to advancing medical education, supporting faculty and resident development, and improving health outcomes in the communities Northbay Health serves.

The affiliation comes as Northbay Health prepares to launch its first residency program with its inaugural Internal Medicine Residency class beginning in July 2027. Ten physicians will join Northbay Health for residency training as the organization continues to build its GME enterprise and expand its academic mission.

"This affiliation with Touro University California represents an important investment in the future of health care in our region,” said Mark Behl, president and CEO of Northbay Health. “We’re building an environment where physicians can learn, grow and make a difference in the communities we call home. Our hope is that the investment we make today will have an impact for years to come -- helping strengthen the health care workforce, expand access to care and inspire the next generation of physicians to build their careers here.”

Through the academic affiliation, Northbay Health residents and faculty will have access to Touro’s academic and research resources, including library and educational tools, scholarly mentorship, faculty development and educational programming. The partnership will also create opportunities for Northbay Health faculty to pursue academic appointments and for residents and faculty to participate in research, presentations, publications and other scholarly activities.

“Touro University California and Northbay Health are part of the same community, and we share a commitment to improving the health and well-being of the people who call this region home,” said Dr. Tami Hendriksz, Campus Provost and Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine. “Together, we have an opportunity to create a true continuum, encouraging people from our community to pursue careers in health care, educating and training them here, and ultimately creating opportunities for them to build their careers and care for their neighbors right here at home. That is how we build a stronger health care workforce and a healthier community for generations to come.”

This new collaboration also creates a pathway to strengthen the region’s health care workforce pipeline. Touro and Northbay Health will work together on opportunities for Touro learners -- including students in medicine, physician assistant, public health and other programs -- to pursue training opportunities at Northbay Health. The organizations will also team up on regional workforce development, community engagement and population health initiatives -- including opportunities for residents and faculty to participate in programs that address regional health priorities.

“This partnership is about more than preparing physicians for their next step,” said Behl. “It’s about creating a pipeline of talented health professionals who understand the people and communities they serve and who have the opportunity to build their careers here.”
