Celebrating Inaugural Diagnostic Medical Sonography White Coat Ceremony
A new tradition begins: honoring the DMS Class of 2026
In a momentous celebration marking a new chapter in the university's history, Touro University California (TUC) hosted its first-ever White Coat Ceremony for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS) program. The event, held in the presence of students, faculty, family members, and esteemed guests, honored the program’s inaugural class as they received their white coats—a symbol of their entry into the healthcare profession.
Dr. Patricia Vargas, Program Director of the DMS program, warmly welcomed the inaugural class of students and their families. Reflecting on her own White Coat Ceremony as a sonographer, she acknowledged the mix of emotions that many students feel at this stage. "The white coat you receive today represents trust, responsibility, and commitment to both your profession and your patients," Dr. Vargas stated, emphasizing the importance of the occasion.
Dean of the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Interim Chief Academic Officer of TUC, Dr. Tami Hendriksz, addressed the students as "trailblazers," highlighting the significance of the occasion for both the university and the community. “You are part of something new and transformative,” she said, urging students to carry forward the traditions and values they help shape. Dr. Hendriksz acknowledged Dr. Vargas' instrumental role in establishing the DMS program, applauding her vision and leadership.
Alexandra Figueroa, President of the Class of 2026, gave a heartfelt speech on behalf of her classmates, reflecting on the journey that brought them to this pivotal moment. She spoke of the challenges the students had faced and the determination that united them. "As we don our white coats today, let them serve as a reminder of our responsibilities," she said, recognizing the trust future patients will place in them.
The ceremony culminated in the presentation of the white coats. Faculty members, including Professor Jane Rizzo, participated in this key part of the event, coating each student as their names were called. The class then recited the Diagnostic Medical Sonographer Oath, pledging to uphold the values of academic excellence, responsibility, and patient care.
The ceremony marked an exciting new beginning for the students of the DMS program, TUC’s first ever Associate’s Degree program. Through the 22 month program these future sonographers will gain a strong foundation in both technical skill and compassionate care—a reflection of Touro University’s commitment to excellence in healthcare education.
Congratulations to the Diagnostic Medical Sonography Class of 2026!
