Dr. Faisal Qazi of Fullerton, DO Founding Class of 2001, has been appointed by Gov. Gavin Newsom to the Osteopathic Medical Board of California.

“I am truly honored and humbled by having been afforded this opportunity to serve my fellow physicians, patients, and all Californians that look to us to provide a safe and healthy environment as well as a culture of sound medical practice,” Qazi said.

The board licenses and regulates osteopathic physicians and surgeons. It also investigates complaints, enforces the state’s Medical Practice Act, and ensures compliance with the state’s Business and Professions Code.

Qazi said his priorities while serving include sustained and comprehensive education of osteopathic physicians, public health policies, and consumer affairs focused on the safety of physicians and patients alike.

A Distinguished Career of Service

Qazi’s experience includes serving as designated institutional officer for the TNG Neurology Residency Program in Pomona since 2021; his role as co-founder of The Neurology Group (TNG) in 2012, which has grown into one of the largest subspecialty practices in the area; and continuing as an assistant professor at Western University since 2008, all after launching his career in private/solo practice in 2006.

He was an associate professor at the University of California, Riverside from 2018 to 2024, and is a member of the California Neurology Society.

The appointment was announced March 20 in a press release from the Governor’s Office. The position does not require Senate confirmation.

This is Qazi’s third gubernatorial appointment. He was named to the California Commission on Aging in October 2020 and was reappointed in June 2024. Qazi leaves the Commission on Aging as he joins the Osteopathic Medical Board.

“First, I am a big proponent of public service and encourage my fellow physicians as well as students to engage in civic works. We as a profession are under-represented in the area of public policy,” Qazi said. “Second, organizational works such as charities and nonprofits have been a personal passion of mine all of my life. Serving on OMBC is an extension of my personal values where patient safety, physician well-being and consumer affairs are all of paramount importance.”

Qazi prior to his service to the state was already an advocate in the Southern California communities in which he serves.

That includes establishing a nonprofit to provide free medical services to those in need. The nonprofit raised $200,000 to support the families of victims of the San Bernardino mass shooting Dec. 2, 2015. It transitioned its focus with implementation of the Affordable Care Act from direct patient services to medical education, to include establishment of a neurology residency program.

DO Carries Touro Spirit Throughout Career

Qazi shared his thoughts on the importance of TUC alumni giving back to the communities they serve.

“I truly believe that the incredible opportunity afforded to us at TUC has led to our personal and professional successes,” Qazi said. “The values we learned here and through our personal experiences warrant that we continue to give back to our society due to the distinct privilege it has afforded us.”

The Osteopathic Medical Board falls under the state’s Department of Consumer Affairs.
