WHY: Since 2004, the American Pharmacists Association (APhA) has used the month of October to celebrate the accomplishments of American pharmacists while raising awareness among the public, patients, policy makers and other stakeholders about the broad roles pharmacists play in health care today. During American Pharmacists Month, Touro and other members of APhA celebrate pharmacists contributions in seasonal and lifespan immunizations; efforts to promote medication effectiveness and adherence; and care management and counseling for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc., in addition to their work on safe distribution of medications. Touro’s celebration includes the celebration of Women in Pharmacy Day in order to especially acknowledge the significant gains women have made pursuing careers in pharmacy and their unique position as trusted health care resources, particularly for women who make an average of 80 percent of the health care purchasing decisions for their families.
