In brief: Hear talk on police brutality, COVID-19’s health effects

On Aug. 27, Touro University California in Vallejo will kick off its sixth annual Social Justice in Public Health Speaker Series with a keynote presentation by the U.S. Deputy Surgeon Rear Admiral Erica G. Schwartz on strategies to address the physical and mental burden of the COVID-19 pandemic on Black, Indigenous and other People of Color.

The series, which is being held via Zoom on select Thursdays from 4 to 6 p.m., will hear from speakers across the county on the upstream determinants that cause sickness, the effects of criminal justice in public health, the impacts of COVID-19 on Native American health, how structural racism is said to negatively affect life expectancy and how we can build healthier communities in California and abroad.
