Peds Club is happy to announce its endorsement of the Shirati Babies Project. As we seek to advocate for children in need, through fundraising, education, and community service, the Shirati Babies Project falls directly in line with our goals. This project was started by our very own Mallory Mitchell after her time in Tanzania.

A little background on the organization:

  • Shirati Babies Project was created to address a lack of vital resources in the maternity ward at Shirati District Hospital in Tanzania. Clean blankets and respiratory supplies are necessary to properly implement a lifesaving protocol called Helping Babies Breathe, which was created by the American Academy of Pediatrics with the World Health Organization to address the goal of reducing neonatal mortality in low resource settings.
  • $10 will sponsor a blanket for an infant born in this hospital and contribute to the purchase of respiratory supplies for the ward. The blanket will be made with local traditional material and will be sewn by the local dressmaker. If you would like to sponsor a blanket as a holiday gift, a card explaining the project will be provided as well as a Shirati Babies Project wristband. Thank you for your kindness and generosity.
  • This project is an opportunity to support something that many Touro students have experienced on Global Health Internships, seeing the need first hand, and speaks to many aspects of Touro's dedication to social justice and community involvement.

Join us on Tuesday (12/1) and Wednesday (12/2) during lunch in the lander hall lobby to hear more about the project and to donate to an amazing cause! Your sponsorship of a blanket makes a great gift for friends and family in this season of giving. We appreciate your support of our club, our classmate, and the Shirati Babies Project.
