Touro University California Celebrates its 2018 Commencement Ceremony

Vallejo, CA (May 24, 2018): Touro University California (TUC) faculty and staff along with community members, special guest speakers, students and their families celebrated their annual commencement ceremony on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

Since 1997, TUC has promoted academic excellence, evidence-based professional practice, inter-professional collaboration and active community engagement to prepare future medical, education and public health professionals to make a positive impact in their community.

Commencement celebrations began on Tuesday morning honoring students of the College of Osteopathic Medicine. Attendees heard from guest speaker Robert Hendren, DO, who has been listed in Best Doctors Inc.’s “The Best Doctors in America” since its inception in 1996, as well as their fellow student Brendan Leach who served as the Rotations Committee Chair and participated in interviewing new applicants to the medical school during his time at TUC.

Later that evening, students of the College of Education and Health Sciences crossed the stage at Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley. After hearing remarks from Ms. Constance Kadish, wife of Touro College and University System president, and other distinguished guests, graduates heard from their fellow students who spoke about how their time at TUC taught them not only how to be effective leaders in their respective fields, but also of the importance of their impact on the communities they work in. “During my three years at Touro, I have learned to look at life through multiple lenses. …I go about my days thinking about how situations affect health, impact the community and how they create change for the future. I have grown in many ways at TUC, but I have to say that this institution helped develop my vision,” said Sagar Rana, who received a Joint Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies and Master of Public Health on Wednesday.

On Wednesday morning, TUC faculty and staff honored students from the College of Pharmacy. Attendees heard from guest speaker Liz Helms, President and CEO of the California Chronic Care Coalition which envisions accessible, affordable and high-quality care for Californians with chronic conditions. Students also heard from Golnoush Golshan who served as president of the Student Government Association and enjoyed organizing events with her colleagues aimed at helping underserved communities. Golnoush will be starting a Pharmacy residency at Kaiser Permanente and attributes her decision to work in a clinical setting to her Touro University California professor Dr. Laura Baumgartner.

Sarah Sweitzer, Provost and Chief Academic Officer sees firsthand how students have been changed by their time at Touro University California. Whether it’s through working at the Student-Run Free Clinic and the Mobile Diabetes Education Center; giving those who do not have proper access to healthcare the tools and knowledge they need to live healthier, more fulfilling lives; or through their contributions to scientific research or applying evidence-based strategies to their classrooms, Provost Sweitzer knows that, “every graduate will use this experience to live a life of great impact while continually upholding these values: respect for the inherent value and dignity of each individual, acceptance and appreciation of diversity, and compassion and service to society.”
