Touro University California
2014 Commencement Ceremony
(Vallejo, CA – May 16, 2014) – Kelly Campbell, a 2014 candidate for the Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree at Touro University California, is not your traditional student.
Before attending Touro, Campbell served five years in the U.S. Air Force, completed a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics at the University of California, Berkeley, enlisted as a medical technician for six years in the U.S. Air Force Reserves, worked in research at the National Ignition Facility at Livermore National Lab, and authored/coauthored almost a dozen articles in peer-reviewed journals.
Fifteen years later, Campbell will not only complete his dream of becoming a physician but will also be one of the key speakers during Touro’s 2014 Commencement Ceremony on Friday, May 23rd, in San Francisco.
Campbell joins approximately 407 degree candidates who will be celebrating commencement inside the ballroom of the San Francisco’s Marriott Marquis Hotel, located at 55 Fourth Street.
The 2014 graduating students represent 130 from the College of Osteopathic Medicine (Doctoral Degree); 95 from the College of Pharmacy (Doctoral Degree); 54 from the Master of Public Health Program; 70 from the Graduate School of Education (Master’s Degree); 32 from the Physician’s Assistant Program (Master’s Degree); 15 from the Master of Science in Medical Health Sciences; and 11 from the Master of Science in Medical Health Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences.
“Our students have been through a rigorous program of study and their determination and efforts have been witnessed by their families, our faculty, and our community,” said Shelley Berkley, Senior Provost and CEO of Touro University Western Division. “What they take away from Touro University California is more than a diploma; it is an education in the Touro tradition and a commitment to serving, leading and teaching in their communities to advance the common good.”
Also speaking at Commencement will be Campbell, John Muller from the College of Education and Health Sciences, and Ryan Ko from the College of Pharmacy.
Muller, a graduating student in the Joint Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies/Master of Public Health Program, began his undergraduate studies at York University in Canada and received his Bachelor of Arts from the University of the Pacific in Sport Sciences. Prior to entering the Touro program, he worked in the medical field as a nurse’s aide in pediatric oncology at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and was also a lab technician at St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Stockton. He will be moving to Los Angeles after graduation and plans to work in Orthopedic Surgery.
Ryan Ko, who will be graduating with a Doctor of Pharmacy degree, is a native of Hercules. He received his Bachelor of Science degree in Information and Computer Science from the University of California, Irvine. He left his computer engineer career in 2009 and enrolled in the Master of Public Health Program. The following year, he entered the College of Pharmacy program and has served as the class president, vice president of Alumni Affairs, and was a speaker at the first Amplify Leadership Workshop.
