Touro Kicks Off 14th Annual Research Day

(Vallejo, CA – April 28, 2015) – Impressive poster presentations and dynamic speakers are lined up for a day of excitement at Touro University California’s 14th Annual Research Day, a yearly tradition that showcases the most recent work of Touro’s faculty and students.

On Wednesday, April 30th from 3:30-6 p.m. inside Farragut Inn, the University celebrates the contributions of its researchers in the fields of basic science, clinical practice, education and public health, with a focus on Metabolism and Nutrition. More than 80 abstracts will be on display inside Touro’s Farragut Inn.

“Touro University California is fortunate to have such talented and remarkable faculty and staff who are doing groundbreaking research on the campus and beyond,” said Shelley Berkley, CEO and Senior Provost of Touro Western Division.

The day kicks off at 1 p.m. with keynote speaker Kathleen Mulligan, PhD at Touro University California (TUC) and the University of California, San Francisco, who will address “Metabolic Alchemy: Clinical Studies of the Conversion of Sugar to Fat.”

Also speaking is Elena Lingas, MPH DrPH at TUC on “Corporate Influence on What We Eat: The Sugar Industrial Complex;” Jeffrey Ritterman, MD at TUC, speaking on “Is Fructose Toxic?;” and Grace Marie Jones, PhD and Arpita Sinha, DO-MPH, both of TUC, speaking on “Nutrition & Lifestyle: Current Community Service and Future Service.” All talks will be held in Lander Hall, Lecture Hall A.

This year our oral sessions will focus on two main areas where our campus excels: 1) human metabolic research and 2) public health. There will be a blend of faculty and student presentations to showcase current research and community service that addresses the epidemics of diabetes, metabolic syndrome and obesity.
